THIS is What Black Hair Looks Like, You Racist Idiots

Oh just when I thought that thread couldn't become any more of a train wreck, the cluelessness strikes again. Check this out from Panoptical:

Um… has anyone looked at their hair? They all have white people hair. I mean, seriously. Except for the bald guy, they’ve all got straight, light-colored hair.

I hope I don’t sound racist, but - black people don’t have straight hair. Have the people objecting to this cartoon ever actually seen a black person?

and this from Sis/Pony:

Excellent point. Indeed. The men there have white guy hair.

This is "black person" hair

This is "black people" hair

This girl? She has "black person" hair, too.

This woman has "black person" hair. Whoa! Would you look at that? A black person with straight hair!

This guy is also a black person with straight hair. Maybe someone should tell him that he's not really allowed to have this hair and still be black.

This guy is dancing with his "black person" hair. Is that impossible too?

This black woman has some great natural highlights in her straight hair. Nice!

I practically keeled over laughing when the people in that thread started talking about what black people hair does and doesn't look like. It just goes to show how you can sleep with, marry, and reproduce with people of color but it doesn't mean you have any understanding of what it means to be one.

People of color have all sorts of hair types. Saying that this cartoon can't be depicting people of color because the men have straight hair is just an example of how far some white people will go to try avoid taking responsibility for their racist assumptions.

I can't tell tell black hair from white hair, but I can tell very wonderful and cool smiles when I see them.

Reading your "about me", congratulations on your cancer fight. I'm facing something dire in the next few weeks. So I am very glad to hear that life isn't necessarily over.

I can speak English, Spanish, Hebrew, Japanese and Greek, as long as we understand "speak" to mean, "I can ask, poorly, where the restroom is."

Best wishes.

Oh, now I get it....since Heart(less), Nine Deuce, and the rest of the gang can no longer deny that there are indeed Black faces in the crowd of evol men gawking the stripper, now they attempt to resort to the "but...butbutbutbut...they have WHITE hair, so they can't be Black, and thusly that cartoon can't be racist!!!" card.

Yeah, right...who the fuck do they take us for, freakin' fools???

I guess that the bald guy also has "White hair, too...right???

Just how stupid do these.....women think that we are not to see with our own eyes??

What a bunch of racist, erotophobic, hateful un-fuckers.

anonymous,

I wish you the very best in whatever you are about to go through. If you'd like to talk about it privately, feel free to send me a comment with your e-mail address. Don't worry, I'll make sure it doesn't show up on my blog and I'll write to you that way.

No matter what, there is always reason for hope. My life is proof of that. I hope you don't mind but I'm going to say a prayer for you tonight.

Anthony,

You know, it really amazes me how much these people revel in their white privilege but then have the nerve to call people of color racists. I'm beginning to believe that these pseudo-radical feminists are FUBAR.

Yeah, God, Bint and Anthony, have you ever actually SEEN a black person?? Sheesh...

also, at least one other person read them all as having -grey- hair, as in: they're Dirty Old Men.

I hope to think I am smart enough never to turn down prayers. I think I'm being a big wimp, there's a 5ish or so % chance of not making it through a surgery. But I've got two little kids that I just love so much, and so the whole has seriously screwed around with my brain as I write wills and do all sorts of stuff like that.

It's one reason I love seeing photos of kids with smiles.

Best wishes again.

What you mean there are black and brown people who don't look like southern africans?

I am shocked I tell you! shocked!

I followed the link, but maybe I missed something... Where is it ever implied anywhere that the men in that audience are black OR white? It's weird how the comments start talking about race seemingly completely out of the blue? What'd I miss?

And yes, good takedown.

To the writer of this article: the reason the so-called black people you've pointed out have straight hair is because they are obviously of mixed race; that is, partially caucasian. There is no way that these people aren't mixed somewhere along the line in their heritage with caucasian, or asian. This is where the long, straight hair has come from. You prove you know little to nothing about human genetics. Black (or African, especially sub-saharan African) do not possess the genetics for long flowing hair. That is because these people are indigenous to sub-saharan hot equatorial climates, where long flowing hair would have been a hinderance to survival.

Prove it. Oh wait, that's right! You can't.

"There is no way that these people aren't mixed somewhere along the line in their heritage with caucasian, or asian. This is where the long, straight hair has come from."

This is just racist ignorance. The fact that you may think these people are Caucasian or Asian doesn't make it so. As a matter of fact, two of the pictures in this post are of African émigres to America. One was from Egypt and the other was from Morocco. Now, if you have some proof that Europeans or Asians are the source of these African populations that have straight hair, then please feel free to produce it. Make sure you take into account how large this infusion of Asians and Caucasians would have to be in order for it to have resulted in the majority of these populations acquiring the genes that give them their hair type.

"You prove you know little to nothing about human genetics."

My genetics professors seemed to be of the opposite view. I think I'll trust their judgment over yours.

"Black (or African, especially sub-saharan African) do not possess the genetics for long flowing hair."

See, here's part of your problem. You are conflating being Black with being African. One can be Black without being African. That's because "Black" describes one's assumed racial category. Because it is a social construct, race can be defined in myriad ways that do not correspond to any particular genetic background. On the other hand, "African" describes someone's origin. Secondly, you're factually wrong. Black people and many African people do possess the genetics that produce offspring with straight hair. The fact that those within a particular African population may not tend to have straight hair does not prove that other Africans do not possess certain genes.

"That is because these people are indigenous to sub-saharan hot equatorial climates, where long flowing hair would have been a hinderance to survival."

That isn't correct. Heck, it isn't even incorrect. It's just stupid and it's not how genetics work. Mutations (genetic variations) don't crop up because they would be advantageous in a particular environment nor do they fail to appear because they might prove to be disadvantageous (i.e. a hindrance to survival).

I guess we are all just people with hair. But I wonder what it would be like to have no hair and that make me feel better again. Good post.
