Press One for Ignorance

What an ode to ignorance! I think we should remind the English-only bigots that people have been speaking multiple languages in this country since before the first Europeans ever stumbled onto these shores.

If you refuse to learn anything other than English, then that's your business but it doesn't mean that everyone else should cater to your choice. There's a reason why this nation's forefathers never made English the official language. Do yourself a favor and figure out why that was! Ignorance isn't a virtue.

i suck at learning languages, but I've certainly tried. I'm okay at german, and my spanish isn't hopelessly horrible (well, it is, but i'm still trying).

canada did this the right way in so many ways...

Oh, crikey. Those people in that video, they just make me *tired*, you know? Like, really? You'd rather curl and dye your flowing locks and find a lot of terrible end-rhymes and write a song about your ignorance than do something about it? Gah.

You know, I'm not even close to fluent in several of the languages I've attempted to learn--for some reason, German is ├╝ber-difficult for me. However, that doesn't mean it's somebody else's fault if I can't understand the language they speak.

You know, I just wish that all kids would have the opportunity to learn multiple languages in school. Definitely learn English but also learn Spanish or Hindi or French or German or Chinese. We treat children like they aren't intelligent to become proficient in more than one language.

We're really doing our children a great disservice in this country.

Face. Palm.

Never mind the fact that the song (musically) absolutely sucks, it's also a piece of bigoted bullshit. Like, about the press one for English thing, why is someone just so bothered by having OTHER languages available? It's not like the English isn't available!

This has nothing to do with me being mono-lingual (pretty certain that's not a word) and everything to do with me having my sexy self in a city near YOU in August. That's right. ALLLLLLLLL THIS will be in the boot. Do the right thing...HOLLA AT A SISTA!

I took German in high school. The 'verb second' rule for German sentences threw me for a while along with determining when to use masculine, feminine and neuter versions of words, but I got the hang of it.

I found it fun to learn another language and explore the culture of the region of the world that uses that particular language.

The neo-Luddites who reject science, technology, and book learning that doesn't fit their particular viewpoints are the losers and it's past time for us as a society to tell them to go to hell.

We cannot afford as a country to have the 'D' students or people who brag they never read running a superpower anymore.

i couldn't get the clip to run, but that's ok. i pretty much get the gist of its delight in being ignorant. language is so beautiful - i fail to see how anyone could resist its many permutations and dialects and words and tongues.

i've been lurking awhile. i don't know how i came to your blog, but i enjoy being able to share your thoughts and your excellent writing.

i'm from suburban New Orleans; i live in AZ now. you remind me of what a gift it is to grow up in a place where eccentricity is so commonplace, and where it's not really eccentricity - it's individuality and creativity and joy in life. i'm also a two time cancer survivor, living in remission...

Tulip, godspeed on your journey!

Breez, honey, do us all a favor and shove your transphobia AND your problems with her accent up your arse. Her being a flaming nonsensical bigot has shit to do with how she speaks, or with her gender.

Then again, maybe "she" and her bro-sband are saving up to finish that sex change operation.

No. Just no. Do you have to engage in transphobia like that? Just because a woman has a deep voice?

For the sex-change crack, it ain't funny to be used as the point of a joke to insult someone else over and over again, you know? I mean, seriously, would it be cool with you if, whenever we saw someone doing something stupid, we said "That's a Breezy thing to do?"

For the language crack - dialects differ - you might as well bitch out various British people for thick accents, and English came from England.

As for the video, it was so full of entitlement that I really couldn't finish it.

I'm sorry y'all. I didn't read the comment before I posted it. If it's from someone I know who has posted here before, I'll sometimes just check the publish button without reading it and come back to it later. I'm trying to decide if I should keep it so that anyone else who comes through can see what you're responding to or should I just remove it. Feedback would be helpful.

Many apologies from the bottom of my heart.

I thought about this all last night and I've decided to remove the comment in question. It's an exercise in cis privilege for me to expect other people to tell me what I should do with it before I take any action.

Ultimately, it's most important to me that this remain a safe space for those that I love, so that made the decision an easy one.

Still, I take full responsibility for the appearance of this comment on my blog. It was my sloppiness that didn't catch it while it was still in moderation.

Not to worry, Bint, it's all good.
